Course Overview:

Using universal design in rapid prototyping instructional design involves considering the potential needs of all learners when designing and delivering instruction by identifying and eliminating unnecessary barriers to teaching and learning while maintaining academic rigor. The design is a systematic process that is employed to develop education and training programs in a consistent and reliable fashion.  Instructional design is a core component of the field and a foundational skill that all educational technology experts should have in their repertoire.  Being informed with models and theories, instructional designers apply their skills and knowledge to bring about predictable results. Using universal design in rapid prototyping is intended to reduce the time and cost of a traditional ISD approach, while increasing its flexibility for all users. Using rapid prototyping, as an instructional design process, strives to realize the structure of the design with a prototype, as early in the process as possible to reduce the time and expense of a full development cycle. This course will help students to analyze, apply, and evaluate principles of using universal design in instructional design to develop education and training materials spanning a wide range of knowledge domains and instructional technologies.

Students will:
  • Examine rapid prototyping, as an instructional design process.
  • Examine universal design for instruction.
  • Examine the phases, levels and models of rapid instructional design.
  • Explore how the design and development phases are accomplished.
  • Examine the principles of instructional design using universal design.
  • Examine universal design in rapid prototyping to reduce the time and cost of a traditional ISD approach.
  • Explore the structure of the design to reduce the time and expense of a full development cycle.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1:  What is Universal Design for Instructional Design

In this lesson the student will define universal design as it applies to instructional design.

Lesson 2:  Phases, Levels and Models of Rapid Prototype Instructional Design

In this lesson, students will examine the different phases, levels and models of rapid prototype instructional design

Lesson 3:  Instructional Design and Rapid Prototyping

In this lesson students will explore how instructional design and rapid prototyping are developed throughout the process.

Lesson 4:  Principles of Universal Design in Instructional Design

In this lesson students will examine and evaluate principles of using universal design in instructional design.

All necessary materials are included.
